The financial police have confiscated 196 kilos of marijuana in north-east Italy. The drugs were in a van. A 53-year-old Pole was temporarily arrested. The cannabis had first been transported from Switzerland to the Czech Republic and was destined for sale in Italy.
The drugs were found during a vehicle check at a highway toll station near Malborghetto Valbruna in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region on Tuesday night, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos. The cannabis shipment was vacuum-packed in 176 packages without an address.
The freight documents gave no indication of the contents. According to Adnkronos, the marijuana would have had a street value of 1.9 million francs. The Polish driver was released after the arrest as he did not meet the requirements for detention. According to the information provided, he has no criminal record. He must answer for importing the narcotics.
The investigation revealed that the cargo originated in Switzerland and had been transported to the Czech Republic. It then made its way to Italy via Eastern Europe. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region borders Slovenia and Austria. Further investigations are underway.
