The Swiss labour market is booming like never before. The number of employed people rose to a record 5.3 million in the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 2.9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. This is according to the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SAKE) released by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. This marks the end of the pandemic's impact on the Swiss labour market, which had previously been at 5.1 million before the outbreak of the coronavirus. The number of employed men increased by 2.6 percent to 2.877 million, while the number of employed women rose by 3.2 percent to 2.427 million. The increase in foreign employed people was 4.8 percent, while the increase in Swiss employed people was 1.9 percent. The 5.3 million employed people corresponded to 4.419 million full-time positions, an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The majority of these full-time equivalents (FTEs) were held by men (2.663 million), while women held 1.756 million FTEs. These are both new records. The strong labour market also led to a decrease in the number of unemployed people. The unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent in the second quarter, compared to 4.1 percent in the same period of the previous year. This means that, according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) definition, there were 186,000 unemployed people in Switzerland, 15,000 fewer than a year ago and the lowest number in 11 years. The ILO unemployment rate is significantly higher than the unemployment rate according to the definition of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which only counts registered unemployed people. The SECO only publishes monthly figures, which remained at a low 1.9 percent in July.nnnnnnnnnn
