Bern and Vienna Want to Digitalize Cross-Border Customs by the End of 2027

Truck drivers will no longer have to stop at the Swiss-Austrian border to complete customs formalities. The two countries have signed an agreement to promote and coordinate their respective digitalisation projects, with implementation measures to be completed by the end of 2027. New processes will digitalise the previously paper-based formalities at the border. The bilateral digitalisation steps agreed between Switzerland and its neighbours will eventually lead to a pan-European solution called "BorderTicket". In Switzerland, the new Goods Traffic System "Passar" was introduced on 1 June 2023, which is a key element for simplifying and digitalising customs clearance. Companies are expected to gradually switch to "Passar" for all customs processes by mid-2025. In summary, the agreement between Switzerland and Austria will lead to a pan-European digitalisation solution, with truck drivers no longer having to stop at the border to complete customs formalities.
