On Wednesday, around 90 freight trains will be able to pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, with an additional 20 freight trains planned to run on the panoramic route. The damaged switch gate in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which was severely damaged after a freight train derailed on August 10th, has been successfully replaced with a mobile gate. In the coming days, necessary adjustments will be made in the signal box and test runs will be conducted. The opening of the east tube will bring more flexibility and relief to customers, with 110 freight trains able to run through the Gotthard axis per day by August 23rd, 2023. In the meantime, freight trains will be diverted via the Lötschberg-Simplon axis and the Brenner route. The BLS can offer up to 48 additional trains per day. International passenger trains will mostly run directly from Thursday, although the journey time will be extended by 60 minutes instead of 120 minutes. The SBB has not granted requests for a general price reduction due to the longer journey time, but will offer discounted tickets from Thursday and GA-Night customers from Tessin will be able to travel from Sunday evenings from 6pm. The Swiss Safety Investigation Authority (SUST) will present initial results next week. Verkehrsminister Albert Rösti understands the possible resumption of passenger traffic at the end of the year, as eight kilometres of reinforcements and embankments need to be replaced. The SEV is calling for a rapid clarification of the accident and for the reintroduction of close-meshed controls on transit trains, as they can contribute significantly to safety, even if they did not prevent the accident in the Gotthard Base Tunnel.nnnnnnnnnn
