The population of the landslide-stricken village of Schwanden GL cannot return home for the time being. The situation in the landslide area above the village is "very critical and unstable", according to the municipality of Glarus Süd, to which Schwanden belongs. On Friday night, further debris was released from the so-called Wagenrunse. Several thousand cubic meters, the volume of some single-family houses, slid into the valley. No new damage was caused. However, experts from the municipality expect further landslides in the short term. "The evacuated population will not be able to return to their apartments for the time being," the municipality said. This includes 97 people. At least, owners of pets were given an hour on Friday afternoon to rescue or at least provide for their animals. In addition, the crisis team is continuously examining whether and when at least part of the evacuated population can be granted access to the apartments. The evacuated people should have the opportunity to retrieve personal effects. The municipality of Glarus Süd is receiving numerous offers of help from private individuals, organizations and other municipalities. "The nationwide solidarity gives us strength in dealing with the demanding situation," it said in the statement. The various offers of assistance are coordinated by the social counseling for the victims of the landslide. The social counseling also supports the affected population in finding suitable housing options. The municipality has also contacted the Glarner Tourism Organization to this end.nnnnnnnnnnnnnn
