In the canton of Valais, the people will have the final say on changes to store opening hours. A broad left-wing coalition submitted a referendum with over 5400 signatures to the State Chancellery on Wednesday. Opponents of the revision of the Valais Store Opening Law believe that this number of signatures is already a "strong signal of support for the sales staff". They said that the staff are strongly opposed to any worsening of their working conditions. In Valais, 3000 valid signatures are required for a referendum to take place. The Store Opening Law was passed by the Valais Grand Council in a second reading in mid-May, with 91 votes in favour, 35 against and two abstentions. The law provides for stores to be open for an extra half hour on weeknights. Economy Director Christophe Darbellay spoke of a "reasonable compromise, a reform with moderation" at the Grand Council vote. The people of Valais will now have the final say on the changes to store opening hours.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
