In the Solothurn landfill Stadtmist, weakly radioactive substances and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have been discovered. There is no immediate danger to the population, as the Solothurn State Chancellery announced on Thursday. Since waste from the watchmaking industry is also stored on the Stadtmist, radioactive material was expected. The contamination by the weakly radioactive material is low, but it complicates the landfill remediation process. Strongly contaminated materials must now be sorted out and disposed of as radioactive waste. In addition, PFAS are chemically, biologically and thermally very stable and hardly degradable substances. Until spring 2024, a test operation will show how the problem of PFAS can be solved during the ongoing remediation. The costs of around 600,000 francs for the test operation are not included in the project costs of 120 million francs. Between 1925 and 1976, Solothurn disposed of the resulting waste on the "Stadtmist" in the agricultural area in the west of the city. Since the three closed landfills endanger the environment, they are to be completely excavated and the material disposed of properly. The remediation costs are paid for 40% by the federal government and the canton, and 20% by the municipality.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
