More Animal Experiments with Severe Pain and Great Suffering

The number of animal experiments has increased despite fewer research projects involving animals. In 2022, according to the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV), more animals were used in experiments of severity 3, which means severe pain, long-term severe damage and great fear for the animals. The increase in animal experiments reflects the active research activity, the BLV said in a statement Thursday. On average, the number of experiments is in the lower range. With 40 fewer research projects involving animals last year, the total number of projects was 2334.
