The Swiss hotels were better occupied in August 2020 than in the previous year, keeping the industry on track for a record year. However, Switzerland Tourism does not expect to exceed the record year of 2019 after the coronavirus pandemic. According to a first estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (BFS), overnight stays in August increased by 1.9%. This increase is due to foreign tourists, who generated 9.3% more overnight stays than in the previous month. Swiss guests, on the other hand, booked fewer stays, with a decrease of 5.6%. So far, the Swiss hotel industry is on a record course. For the months of January to July, the BFS reported 24.2 million overnight stays, 3.5% more than in 2019. The August figures are also expected to be higher than in 2019. However, Switzerland Tourism does not expect to reach a record in 2023. The share of Swiss guests is decreasing again, and the competition in the south and at the sea is back and in demand. Therefore, foreign guests will not be able to compensate for the loss of Swiss guests over the entire current year. The definitive and absolute figures for overnight stays and further information on hotel overnight stays from January to August will be published by the BFS on October 5th.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
