Energy Minister Rösti: No EU Electricity Agreement “at Any Price”

Switzerland does not need to enter into a power agreement with the EU "at any cost", according to Energy Minister Albert Rösti (SVP). He said that such an agreement would be a contribution to secure supply, but not a guarantee for crisis times. The Swiss are physically part of the European power grid and therefore do not need to fear exclusion from the 70% rule, which will come into effect in 2025. Rösti believes that a power agreement between Switzerland and the EU is realistic from 2025. He also believes that Switzerland should prepare for a hard implementation of the 70% rule, which could exclude Switzerland. To avoid winter shortages, Rösti wants to increase renewable energy production by three to five terawatt hours by 2030 or 2035. He warned that this will require visible interventions in the landscape, and that if the resistance is too great, the energy strategy will fail.
