The Burka ban in the canton of St. Gallen has been in place for five years, but has never been enforced. No complaints have been filed with the prosecutor's office, and no one has been fined for wearing a burka, nikab, or similar clothing in the past five years. The ban was approved by two-thirds of the St. Gallen electorate in September 2018 and came into effect on January 1, 2019. It states that covering one's face in public is illegal if it threatens public safety or religious or social peace. So far, no such cases have been reported to the police. At the national level, a federal law is being drafted to regulate the so-called burka ban, based on the popular initiative "for a veil ban" accepted by 51.2% of the people and the Council of States in March 2021. Violations of the ban on face covering will be punishable by up to one thousand Swiss francs. The draft law is still awaiting approval by the National Council.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
