The Swiss Federal Council has shown understanding for the surprised reactions to the short consultation period for the amendment of the Wolfsregulation. Therefore, the Federal Council plans to temporarily implement the implementation regulations for the planned amendment to the Hunting Law for two years. In 2024, the Federal Council will send the planned amendment to the Hunting Law for a regular consultation. Then it will be possible to submit a statement within the known period. According to the current plan, the new ordinance should enter into force definitively on 1 February 2025. The consultation on the planned revision of the Hunting Ordinance was kept so short due to the urgency of the matter, said the Federal Council. The Federal Council's position is clear: it wants to protect people and livestock, but also to preserve the species. The species should be preserved with a minimum number of wolves. The Federal Council spoke of a lower threshold of twelve packs. On 1 July this year, the Federal Council eased the shooting of wolves with the entry into force of the revised Hunting Ordinance. Currently, there are over 300 wolves and 32 wolf packs in Switzerland, with ten packs and an estimated 70 wolves in the Valais alone. The number of these animals is increasing exponentially.
