Berset Draws Positive UNO Balance – Despite Little Countable

Alain Berset, the Swiss President, has drawn a positive conclusion from this year's UN Summit in New York, despite the lack of tangible progress. He noted that people are now more willing to meet in person after three years of pandemic, and that personal contact is essential for politics. This was demonstrated in the open Security Council debate on Wednesday about Russian aggression in Ukraine, which brought together the Ukrainian President, the Russian Foreign Minister, his US counterpart, and many other world leaders. Berset noted the immense tension caused by the Russian aggression, and how it is exacerbating other global crises and widening the gap between rich and poor. In his speech to the Security Council, he called for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory, end the war, and respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Swiss are helping to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population, provide justice to the victims, and promote a political solution to the conflict. They are also providing humanitarian aid and working with the Ukrainian government on reconstruction.
