The governments of the cantons of Geneva and Vaud, as well as the city of Geneva, have expressed their concern over the planned job cuts at Tamedia. The Swiss media company announced on Wednesday that it would cut up to 28 jobs in the West of Switzerland, with the aim of saving 3.5 million francs in the Romandie region. The State Council of Vaud expressed its regret in a letter to Tamedia's management, noting the potential loss of a significant number of jobs in the editorial departments of the Tribune de Genève, 24 Heures, the joint Tamedia editorial and Le Matin Dimanche. Antonio Hodgers, President of the State Council of Geneva, said he was "shocked by the extent of this cost-saving plan and the planned dismissals, which will inevitably have a strong impact on quality". The City Council of Geneva also condemned the job cuts, noting that they would weaken the profession even further and threaten the diversity of the Swiss media landscape. Tamedia informed its employees in the German-speaking part of Switzerland on Thursday morning that it would cut up to 20 jobs there, with the aim of saving a total of 6 million francs.
