Swiss scientists have successfully healed paralyzed mice using gene therapy. By stimulating the regrowth of nerves across completely severed spinal cords, the nerves were directed to reconnect at the correct location below the injury site. After the gene therapy developed by the Neurorestore research institute, mice with complete spinal cord injuries regained the ability to walk, displaying similar gait patterns to those of mice that had learned to walk again after an incomplete spinal cord injury. Spontaneous recovery of motor functions is possible when the spinal cord of mice and humans is only partially injured, but not after a complete spinal cord injury. Before this gene therapy can be applied to humans, many obstacles must be overcome, according to the researchers.
