At a meeting, Swiss Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis discussed issues such as migration and cross-border relations with Italy with the cantonal government of Ticino. The situation of the Italian-speaking regions was also discussed. Cassis looked back on the most difficult legislative period since the Second World War. He mentioned the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian attack on Ukraine, the refugee movements and the looming collapse and forced takeover of the major bank Credit Suisse in Switzerland as the biggest challenges. With regard to the large number of refugees arriving in Lampedusa (I), Cassis described Ticino as particularly exposed. The cantonal government is aware of this and takes it into account in its relations with Italy, he said. Switzerland has recently been able to conclude various agreements with Italy, including in the transport sector, the special status of the enclave of Campione and the removal of Switzerland from an Italian black list of tax havens. With regard to the situation of the Italian-speaking minority in Switzerland, Cassis said that he always emphasizes the multilingualism of Switzerland and the importance of minorities abroad in international organizations and commissions. The President of the Ticino Government, Raffaele De Rosa, called for a younger image of his canton than the one currently circulating. Ticino has a high level of competence and is not over-aged. With regard to asylum, De Rosa called for a better distribution of asylum seekers among the cantons and higher financial resources from the federal government.
