Majority of Candidates Against Automatic Facial Recognition

A survey of candidates for the Swiss federal elections in October revealed that a majority of them oppose the use of facial recognition technology in public spaces. 80% of candidates for the National Council and the Council of States said they would support a ban on facial recognition in public spaces. This was supported by 52.7% and 55.2% of National Council and Council of States candidates respectively. The support for a ban ranged from 90% of Green Party candidates to over 60% of FDP and Mitte candidates. Only the SVP candidates narrowly opposed the ban, with 51.5% voting against it. The survey was conducted by the alliance "Protect Fundamental Rights - Stop Facial Recognition", which is made up of the Swiss section of Amnesty International, Algorithmwatch CH and the Digital Society. The alliance is calling for a national ban on biometric mass surveillance in public spaces.
