National Council Wishes Tax Deductions for Greening of Buildings

The Swiss National Council has voted in favour of a motion from Greta Gysin (Green/TI) to allow tax deductions for green roofs and facades. The motion was supported by 162 votes to 16 with 9 abstentions and is a particular concern of the canton of Ticino. Green roofs and facades are beneficial in cities, especially in the face of heatwaves and heavy rainfall, and Ticino has been particularly affected. The Federal Council recommended a no vote on the motion, citing the lack of established tax practice for greening. However, the Federal Department of Finance is willing to review the issue with the Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK) and the cantons, and if the result is positive, a change in regulations can be made. The motion will now be sent to the Council of States.
