The Swiss government has officially taken on a mandate to accompany the peace negotiations between the Colombian government and a splinter group of the former guerrilla organisation FARC (EMC). Switzerland will join Ireland, Norway and Venezuela in providing political and technical support to the negotiations as a guarantor state. The Colombian government is aiming to include all armed groups in a comprehensive peace agreement. To kick off the negotiations, the parties signed a ceasefire agreement on Monday. The agreement stipulates that by mid-January, forces, police and rebels will refrain from offensive operations against each other. The EMC splintered off from the largest rebel group in the country after the 2016 peace agreement between Colombia and the left-wing FARC. Today, the organisation is mainly involved in drug trafficking, illegal mining and extortion. Colombia has suffered from a civil war between left-wing rebels, right-wing paramilitaries and the military for 52 years. Although the security situation has improved since the 2016 peace agreement, parts of the South American country are still controlled by illegal groups. Peace talks are also currently underway with the guerrilla organisation ELN.
