The Swiss Accident Insurance (Suva) reported around 911,000 occupational and leisure accidents and occupational diseases in the past year, a significant increase of 9.5% compared to the previous year.
Leisure accidents saw the biggest increase, rising 12% to around 601,000, mainly due to the lifting of coronavirus restrictions and the sunny and dry weather.
Occupational accidents and occupational diseases also reached a record high of 293,000, an increase of 5.9% year-on-year.
The higher number of employees was cited as the main reason for this. Heat days with temperatures over 30 degrees lead to 7% more accidents in the construction and transport sectors.
All accident insurers according to the Accident Insurance Act (UVG) paid out 5.0 billion francs in insurance benefits in 2021.
The benefits for 2022 are not yet fully known. On average, 96% of all reported accidents and occupational diseases are recognised.
The UVG statistics do not include accidents of children, students, housewives and househusbands, self-employed and pensioners.
