The representatives of the Federal Democratic Union (EDU) and the Lega dei Ticinesi will continue to join the SVP parliamentary group in the next parliamentary term. This was announced by the SVP on Saturday.

The SVP National Council parliamentary group will therefore comprise 65 people in the new four-year term of office, according to the SVP Switzerland press release. The EDU won two National Council seats in the elections on October 22, one more than before. They are occupied by Andreas Gafner (BE, previously) and Erich Vontobel (ZH, new).

The Lega holds one seat and continues to be represented in the National Council by Lorenzo Quadri. The SVP parliamentary group has 55 members in the current legislative period.

The parliamentary group formation process is not yet complete due to the second round of the Council of States elections in Geneva, the SVP Switzerland writes further. "We would be delighted if the representation of the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG) would also join our parliamentary group," says parliamentary group president Thomas Aeschi in the communiqué.

On November 12, Mauro Poggia (MCG) will face Lisa Mazzone (Greens) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP) in the second round of voting in the canton of Geneva. Both are already members of the Council of States. Also in the running in this canton is Céline Amaudruz from the SVP.

Five priorities defined

The new SVP parliamentary group met for the first time after the elections at the end of October at a two-day meeting in Bern. It decided to declare five topics as priorities for the new legislature. For example, the SVP parliamentary group wants to stop the "asylum chaos", as it wrote.

This includes systematic border controls and the consistent deportation of criminal foreigners as well as asylum procedures in transit zones and third countries. People who enter Switzerland via a safe third country should not be entitled to asylum.

The SVP parliamentary group also wants to take action against a Switzerland of 10 million, against "creeping EU integration" and against "left-wing experiments with our AHV and healthcare system". It also wants to stand up for Swiss neutrality and national defense.
