The Swiss embassy in Kathmandu has made CHF 50,000 available for emergency aid following the severe earthquake in Nepal. As the Nepalese authorities have not yet requested international aid, Switzerland is not currently sending any experts to the earthquake region.

This was announced by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Saturday afternoon at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The FDFA headquarters and the Swiss embassy in Kathmandu are closely monitoring the situation in the earthquake region. The embassy is in contact with both the authorities and partner organizations.

The emergency aid funds could be used to provide the local authorities with 500 tarpaulins for emergency shelters, 1,000 blankets and 2,000 hygiene kits. This aid will benefit around 500 displaced families, writes the FDFA

The FDFA said on Saturday morning that it was not aware of any Swiss victims of the earthquake in a remote region in western Nepal. On X, formerly Twitter, the FDFA expressed its condolences to the relatives of the victims and the injured.

According to measurements by the National Earthquake Monitoring Center (NEMRC), the quake had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred on Friday evening at 11.47 p.m. local time, when many people were asleep. According to the police, at least 157 people were killed. At least 170 people were also injured. The number of victims has risen over the past few hours. No confirmed information was initially available from several areas cut off from the outside world.
