The canton of Graubünden wants to remove four wolf packs. It has applied to the federal government for permission to "completely remove" the Stagias, Vorab, Beverin and Lenzerhorn wolf packs, it announced on Tuesday.

The aim is to prevent the proven attacks on cattle by the Stagias and Vorab wolf packs as well as the repeated overcoming of herd protection measures by the Beverin and Lenzerhorn wolf packs for the coming grazing season, according to the press release.

The canton has also applied for the killing of up to two thirds of the pups of the Rügiul wolf pack in Poschiavo and the Jatzhorn wolf pack in Davos. Graubünden applied for a total of 27 culls. In addition, a further 17 culls of young wolves have already been approved under current legislation.

As a first step, the canton aims to efficiently minimize conflicts with humans and livestock in problem areas with behaviourally conspicuous wolves, according to the press release.

There are currently twelve wolf packs living in Graubünden. The total number of individual animals is still unclear and a cantonal estimate of the population has not yet been completed. In mid-September, the wildlife authorities estimated the number of wolves at over 100.

Hunters should hunt wolves

The canton of Graubünden submitted the applications in response to the Federal Council's relaxation of wolf protection, which was approved on November 1 and comes into force on December 1. The first removals under the new law are possible until January 31, 2024.

The canton also wants to deploy hunters during the annual special hunt. The authorities are in contact with the cantonal patent hunters' association and intend to inform hunters in the affected regions in the coming days.
