Deutsche Bahn clearly misses punctuality target for 2023

Deutsche Bahn passengers have to wait for their delayed long-distance train even more often this year than in previous years. The Group's ICE and IC trains only reached 58.6 percent of their stops without major delays in October, not least due to numerous roadworks, as the Group announced on Friday.

A train is considered punctual if it is less than six minutes late. Canceled trains are not included in the statistics. Missed connections are also not included.

Deutsche Bahn has clearly missed the punctuality target it set itself this year: at the beginning of the year, the Group had set itself a punctuality target of well over 70 percent for long-distance services. "With a punctuality rate of around 66 percent in the first ten months, it is clear that the punctuality target of around 70 percent for 2023 can no longer be achieved," a spokesperson has now announced.

Persistent deterioration

The fact that Deutsche Bahn has a problem with punctuality, especially in international comparison, has been known for years and is often the subject of malicious jokes. The problem has recently worsened significantly: it fell from 75.2 percent in 2021 to 65.2 percent last year.

A look at Switzerland, which has a smaller network but much stricter punctuality standards, shows that the DB values from 2020 were not yet convincing either. From January to October 2023, 90.6 percent of SBB long-distance trains were on time - in other words, they were less than three minutes late.

One of the main reasons for the poor figures in Germany is the dilapidated infrastructure on which the railroads have been operating for years, but which is now collapsing. According to the company, almost three quarters of long-distance trains were affected by at least one construction site on their journey in October. According to DB, there is at least one disruption every day on the route between Frankfurt and Mannheim, which is particularly important for long-distance traffic throughout Germany.
