Meteorologists are predicting heavy rainfall, particularly for Tuesday night and Tuesday itself. The federal government is therefore warning of a rapid rise in water levels, flooding and landslides for parts of Vaud and Lower Valais as well as for Saanenland in the canton of Bern.
MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, is expecting 100 to 130 millimetres of precipitation in the regions mentioned from Monday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon. This was reported on Monday on the federal government's naturgefahren.ch website. At the same time, the snow line is expected to drop to 1500 meters above sea level.
Accordingly, the federal government raised the warning level to level 4 of 5 and warned of "great danger" on Monday. In particular, it recommends staying away from riverbanks and steep slopes and avoiding steep slopes. A mudslide could break out suddenly and without warning.
The authorities also asked the population in the affected areas not to go into cellars and basements if there was a risk of flooding. The weather situation is also having an impact on the avalanche situation: there is a high risk of avalanches from the Vaud Alps and the Lower Valais to far into the Upper Valais and in neighboring parts of the Bernese Oberland.
A warm front had already brought strong south-westerly to westerly winds across the northern side of the Alps on Monday night. In the Alps and on the Jura mountains, gale-force winds blew in places. The strongest winds were recorded on the Jungfraujoch BE at 131 kilometers per hour.
According to the weather service Meteonews, there were gusts of up to 129 km/h on the Titlis OW. On the Säntis AR, the meteorologists measured 128 km/h and on Crap Masegn GR 121. On the Chasseral BE in the Jura, it blew at up to 101 kilometers per hour. On the Uetliberg in Zurich, the top speed was 92 km/h.
