Fatal accident during logging work

A 77-year-old Swiss man died in an accident in Vers-l'Eglise (VD) near Les Diablerets while clearing wood.

According to a press release from the Vaud cantonal police, the man had attempted to clear wood from the Grande Eau river using a construction machine. A dam gave way under the weight of the machine.

The construction machine tipped over and the man was thrown into the river. According to the press release published on Tuesday night, the man was swept away by the river current.

He was found submerged in the water a few hundred meters further downstream. The 77-year-old from the region was taken to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) hospital in Lausanne in a serious condition. He succumbed to his injuries there in the late afternoon.

Eyewitnesses informed the police about the accident at around 3.30 pm. According to the press release, a REGA helicopter, an ambulance and the fire department were involved in the rescue operation.
