Grabbed a bargain at an unbelievable price on Black Friday? Hopefully not a case of online fraud. To avoid a rude awakening after a shopping spree on the internet, the Swiss platform against counterfeiting and piracy "Stop Piracy" has put together tips to protect against fraudsters.
Web address: Cyber criminals often use a modified version of an existing web address. Extensions such as "-switzerland" or "-suisse" are often used to simulate a reference to Switzerland.
Imprint and contact options: An imprint should include the company address, e-mail address and legal information as well as a commercial register entry, for example. A non-existent or incomplete legal notice is an indication of a fake store.
Reviews: Online stores with hardly any or no reviews should arouse suspicion. However, a conspicuously high number of positive reviews is also a warning signal.
Returns: Caution is advised if there are no return options. Although there is no legal right to exchange or return goods in Switzerland, many Swiss online retailers grant a voluntary right of return, according to "Stop Piracy".
Price: Excessively high prices often do not bode well. Reputable providers grant discounts that are usually limited in time and in a plausible relationship to the usual price.
