There are more doctors in the city than in the countryside. There, they work around ten percent more per week. The majority of young professionals are also female. This is according to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

On 31 December 2021, 9184 doctors were working in medical practices and outpatient centers in Switzerland. Of these, 4785 were men and 4399 women, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday.

More and more female doctors are working in primary healthcare. At the end of 2021, the proportion of women was 47.9%, compared to 43.4% at the end of 2018. In addition, over 60% of doctors under the age of 45 working at the end of 2021 were women.

Three quarters of primary care physicians practised in the city, 17.5% in urban areas or rural centers and 7.6% in the countryside. However, a good 60 percent of Switzerland's population also lived in the city.
