An important decision will be made on Saturday in the race to succeed Federal President Alain Berset. The SP parliamentary group will decide in the morning which two candidates it will officially nominate.

The SP parliamentary group will announce its decision at a media conference afterwards, as it announced in advance. The point de presse is expected to take place at around 12.30, it said.

The SP representatives in the National Council and Council of States had already decided on Friday to run on a two-person ticket in the election to replace Berset. Anyone who does not make it onto the ticket will probably have little chance of taking a seat in the national government.

In purely legal terms, the United Federal Assembly is free in its election decisions - and is not bound by the nominations of the respective parliamentary group. However, since Christoph Blocher was voted out of the Federal Council and Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf was elected in 2007, no one has been elected to the national government against the will of their own party.

Six candidates are vying to succeed Berset. Four of them are men from German-speaking Switzerland: Bernese National Councillor Matthias Aebischer, his Graubünden colleague Jon Pult, Basel's President of the Government Beat Jans and Zurich Councillor of States Daniel Jositsch.

Evi Allemann, a member of the Bernese cantonal government and former National Councillor, is the only woman to have expressed an interest in the vacant seat on the Federal Council. The only candidate from French-speaking Switzerland is the Vaud National Councillor Roger Nordmann.
