The security of the supply of vaccines in Switzerland is to be increased with a view to future pandemics. The country's position as a location for the production of vaccines is also to be strengthened. This is what the Federal Council envisages in the Vaccine Strategy 2035, which it adopted on Wednesday.
The departments concerned have been tasked with implementation, the federal government announced. The Covid-19 pandemic has made it clear how important vaccine research and stable international production and supply chains are in order to guarantee the supply of vaccines.
The strategy adopted by the Federal Council provides for greater support for vaccine research and development in Switzerland through better coordination of central players and processes.
Promising projects from basic research are exposed to the increased risk of getting stuck in the preclinical stage and not reaching the market, the report continued. The focus should not least be on so-called next-gen technologies, such as mRNA technology.
Reservation and more international cooperation
According to the Federal Council, the supply of vaccines should also be strengthened in the event of a pandemic, for example through increased reservation contracts between the federal government and the relevant companies.
Such reservation contracts already exist for the reservation of production capacities for the manufacture of influenza pandemic vaccines. In addition, reservation contracts are to be negotiated with companies that produce vaccines to protect against other viruses or pathogens that could trigger a pandemic.
According to the Federal Council, international cooperation should also be intensified. Switzerland needs partnerships, as the country is not self-sufficient in vaccine development and production.
The strategy is to be evaluated in the form of an interim report by 2030.
