Energy companies plan market for grid services with Swissgrid

The national grid operator Swissgrid is working on a project with seven Swiss energy supply companies. The aim is to create a common market for grid and system services from flexible, decentralized energy resources.
One of the questions is how flexible, decentralized energy resources - such as batteries - can be used to ensure the stable operation of the electricity grid, according to a press release issued by Swissgrid on Wednesday. In addition to the transmission system operator, the distribution system operators Azienda Elettrica di Massagno (AEM), CKW, Elektrizitätswerk der Stadt Zürich (EWZ), Groupe E, Primeo Energie, Romande Energie and St. Galler Stadtwerke (SGSW) are also involved in the project.
The aim is to develop a concept and market design. The aim is to improve scalability on the one hand and the efficiency of coordination between the transmission and distribution grid operators and system service providers on the other. The concept phase should be completed by the end of 2024.
Due to the expansion of renewable energies, the number of volatile energy resources in the electricity grid is increasing. In the case of so-called ancillary services, the energy companies supply electricity in the event of bottlenecks or, conversely, withdraw electricity in the event of an oversupply. Swissgrid pays the companies for this service in order to keep the grid stable.
