Following the shooting in Sion on Monday, which left two people dead and one injured, the alleged perpetrator confirmed his confession to the crimes at a hearing held by the public prosecutor's office. The 36-year-old explained his actions and his motives.
These statements are the subject of detailed investigations, the Valais public prosecutor's office announced on Thursday. The man had already confessed when he was arrested by the police in Saint-Léonard on Monday afternoon after fleeing for several hours. The accused is presumed innocent, it added.
The man did not put up any resistance when he was arrested. The police found the suspected murder weapon, a Browning 12/70 caliber semi-automatic rifle and ammunition, in his car. In total, the investigators seized two rifles, a cell phone, computer equipment, objects and documents at various locations for evaluation.
Following his arrest, the accused was subjected to various investigations before being questioned and detained by the cantonal police on Monday evening. The next day, he was heard by the public prosecutor, who applied to the compulsory measures court for his pre-trial detention.
Victim killed instantly
An autopsy was carried out on the two fatalities, a 34-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man. They were fatally hit by the projectiles when the shots were fired and were probably killed instantly. The injured woman was examined clinically. According to police reports on Monday, the 49-year-old woman was out of danger.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the investigation is still ongoing. Numerous hearings have already been held and will continue over the next few days, it said. Among other things, trace, sample and ballistics analyses are currently being carried out.
In view of the ongoing investigations, the public prosecutor's office did not wish to disclose any further information on the case on Thursday.
The suspected perpetrator opened fire on the two women and the man at two different locations in the Valais capital on Monday morning. At the first crime scene, in a parking lot in Rue Oscar-Bider, he shot and killed a 34-year-old woman. A few minutes later, he killed a man at a painting store in Sion and injured a woman, his former boss and an ex-employee.
Involved in several proceedings
According to the public prosecutor's office on Monday, the evidence so far points to a planned crime. The man was known to the judicial authorities. He was involved in several proceedings, but was not considered a high-risk person according to the Valais judicial authorities.
The 36-year-old knew his victims and was in a legal dispute with them. Among other things, he had filed charges against the 34-year-old in 2021 for defamation, threats, coercion and defamatory accusations. The victim reported him for coercion a year later, but later withdrew the charges. The dispute continued this year. According to media reports, he allegedly harassed the woman.
The second victim, the manager of the painting business, together with relatives, had reported the alleged perpetrator for insults, unauthorized recording of conversations and threats. He was sentenced to a conditional fine and appealed against the verdict.
