The man arrested a week ago after a school shooting in Cortaillod, Neuchâtel, has been deported from Switzerland. The 25-year-old Algerian is being escorted back to the German border, where he had first applied for asylum.
He is to be handed over to the German authorities there. The Neuchâtel public prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation against him on suspicion of causing public alarm, as it announced on Friday.
The man had behaved conspicuously on the school grounds of the Neuchâtel municipality last Friday afternoon and shouted "Allahu akbar" after coming into contact with a teacher and a technical employee. As he was perceived as a threat, an amok alarm was triggered at the school.
No connection to terrorism
The Algerian had made his first application for asylum in Germany and had subsequently traveled through several European countries under various identities. "To date, no connection to terrorism has been established and the person concerned is not the subject of an alert in the European Union in this connection," the statement from the Neuchâtel police and public prosecutor's office continued.
The defendant's previous convictions therefore fall into the category of minor and medium criminality. "The behavioral disorders in this person, which were observed in particular by the staff of the federal asylum center in Boudry NE upon his arrival, have been confirmed by a medical diagnosis," added the police and the public prosecutor's office. The asylum seeker had arrived in the canton of Neuchâtel just a few days before the crimes.
After being medically stabilized in a secure environment following his arrest, the man was transferred to a correctional facility outside the canton of Neuchâtel on Friday and then deported from Switzerland.
