The SVP has accepted the departure of President Marco Chiesa "with great regret". The party thanked the President for his "great services" over the past four years.

This was announced by the SVP on Thursday. Under the presidency of the Ticino Council of States, the SVP achieved the third-best election result in its history and won additional seats, particularly in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, the SVP writes.

Chiesa's strong presence among the party base helped the SVP a great deal, particularly in French-speaking Switzerland. The party was able to gain four seats there in the October elections. In Ticino, the SVP gained one seat. Chiesa was the first SVP president from Ticino and Latin Switzerland.

The SVP search committee has already begun its work, the statement continued. Possible candidates can be submitted until January 19. The delegates will then elect Chiesa's replacement at their meeting on March 23.

Chiesa was elected party president in 2020. On Thursday, it became public that he will not be standing for re-election at the end of his ordinary term of office in March 2024.
