Graubünden SVP cantonal president Roman Hug also does not want to succeed Marco Chiesa as leader of the Swiss SVP. The newly elected National Councillor ruled out a candidacy on Friday.

Chiesa, a member of the Canton of Ticino Council of States, announced via the media on Thursday that he would be stepping down from the SVP presidency at the end of his regular term of office in March 2014.

Hug justified his decision not to stand as Chiesa's successor by saying that he would "represent the interests of our population in Bern in the best possible way". The 43-year-old trained structural draughtsman and architect also wrote in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency that he presides over the Graubünden cantonal party "with great pleasure".

Gregor Rutz, Werner Salzmann, Jean-Luc Addor, Benjamin Fischer and Manuel Strupler had already canceled before Hug.
