On Thursday morning, a balloon bear in Basel triggered a water rescue on the Rhine. Shortly before 9 a.m., the rescue operations center received a report that an unidentified object was floating in the Rhine.
At the time, the rescue services could not rule out the possibility that it was a person in distress, according to the police. The professional fire department was therefore deployed with three boats as well as the cantonal police on their boat and on land. The ambulance service was also deployed.
Around twenty minutes after the alarm was raised, the boat patrol from the professional fire department gave the all-clear after they had rescued the supposed victim from the water. It turned out that the supposed person was a bear-shaped balloon. "However, there is still no trace of the owner," the statement continues.
The Basel rescue organizations were called out to 15 water rescue missions last year and were able to save 9 people, according to the police. The rescue organizations are therefore grateful for any conspicuous observations.
