Schauspielhaus Zürich: Deficit due to declining audience numbers

The Schauspielhaus Zürich is closing the 2022/23 financial year with a loss of CHF 1.39 million. This is partly due to the significant decline in audience numbers and sponsorship income.

This was revealed in the annual report published by the company on Tuesday at the Annual General Meeting.

Audience numbers did not meet expectations over the entire season, as the Schauspielhaus stated in a press release. With around 3 million in income from ticket sales, the budget target was clearly missed by more than 2 million. In Zurich, 94,577 spectators attended one of the 477 performances.

The two large venues Pfauen and Schiffbau-Halle in particular were underutilized with 48 percent and 54 percent respectively. With 12,048 tickets, the family play Pinocchio, directed by Wu Tsang, recorded by far the most admissions.

Sponsorship and fundraising were also unable to maintain the high level of previous years and fell short of expectations with income of around 1.45 million, according to the statement. In order to reduce the looming loss, the Schauspielhaus already took cost-cutting measures in the first half of the season - including a hiring freeze.
