Members of the Thurgau authorities charged in the Hefenhofen animal welfare case

The trial against the former Thurgau cantonal veterinarian has begun at Frauenfeld District Court. He and other cantonal employees are accused of various misconduct in the Hefenhofen animal welfare case from 2017.
At the beginning of the trial, the lawyer for the farmer from Hefenhofen, who appeared as a private plaintiff, took the floor. He recalled the first-instance acquittal of the horse breeder of the charges of cruelty to animals.
However, the criminal investigations against the then cantonal veterinarian and other cantonal employees had been delayed. The indictment was incomplete and inadequate, for example with regard to the "unlawful" eviction from the farm.
According to the prosecution's indictment, the former head of the veterinary office is accused of failing to enforce animal welfare regulations. The charges range from abuse of office, favoritism and cruelty to animals to damage to creditors and fraudulent mismanagement, theft of property, theft and coercion.
