On Wednesday, the Bern government council commissioned an amendment to its expenses regulations. Last week, it became known that members of the government had also charged small contributions in recent years.
The State Chancellery has been tasked with drafting the ordinance on the reimbursement of expenses for members of the cantonal government, as announced by the Bernese executive on Wednesday. The reimbursement of expenses is to be restricted by a financial lower limit.
Last week, a report on Swiss television's "Kassensturz" revealed that government councillors had charged for snacks such as a banana or a butter pretzel, as well as parking tickets or the loan of a hat and scarf for a reception.
On Monday, government councillor Philippe Müller (FDP) defended himself at a party meeting of the FDP Stadt Bern. He had "never submitted a single expense report for very small expenses". The image conveyed in the article was false.
The members of the Bernese cantonal government earn around CHF 280,000 per year. They also receive a lump-sum expenses allowance of around CHF 8,000. According to the current regulations, members of the cantonal government are permitted to claim very small expenses, as the canton confirmed to "Kassensturz" last week.
