Reduction in agricultural direct payments meets with resentment

Due to the tight financial situation, the Federal Council wants to spend a total of CHF 347 million less on agriculture between 2026 and 2029. At the end of the consultation process, the bill is in a difficult position with both parties and associations.
The Federal Council wants to increase support for adapting agricultural production to climate change and, among other things, use more money for structural improvements. It intends to make the necessary funds available through reallocations.
The Farmers' Union rejects both the reduction in the agricultural budget and the transfers from the budget for direct payments. The SVP and FDP also reject the proposal and are calling for the payment framework to be maintained from 2022 to 2025.
The SP and the Greens also reject austerity measures for direct payments. Both parties and the Environmental Alliance are critical of the additional funds for structural improvements. These would cement outdated structures and their impact on biodiversity still needs to be examined.
