The Herisau-based textile company Cilander has announced that it is considering closing its three sites in Herisau, Flawil SG and Lützelflüh BE in August 2024. The company is battling rising costs and falling demand. All 190 employees would be affected.
Demand for its products has collapsed both in Switzerland and abroad, Cilander wrote in a press release on Thursday. The company also experienced difficulties due to rising energy and production costs in Switzerland, inflation abroad and a strong Swiss franc. These factors led to high losses.
Despite all efforts, "the economic continuation of the company is in question", according to the company. Cilander's Chairman of the Board of Directors, Rolf Schmid, is quoted as saying that the cessation of production and business operations at the end of August 2024 appears to be unavoidable.
Various scenarios for the continuation of operations have been examined. However, a timely closure of the production sites would enable a controlled withdrawal from the market.
Over 200 years of company history
The consultation process was initiated on Thursday. A social plan will be drawn up and employees will be supported in their professional reorientation.
The company had already announced job cuts in May 2023. The company has been finishing textiles since 1814 and exports its products to over 80 countries. According to its own information, the company is one of Europe's leading suppliers in the field of textile finishing.
