Ukrainian leadership thanks EU for new aid

The Ukrainian leadership has thanked the European Union for granting new financial aid amounting to 50 billion euros (around 46.6 billion Swiss francs).
Ukraine's economy and finances would be stabilized in the long term, which is just as important as arms aid or sanctions against Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote this on the X network (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. "It is important that the decision was taken by all 27 EU leaders, which once again shows the strong unity of the EU."
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal wrote on X: "The EU member states have once again demonstrated their solidarity and unity with the Ukrainian people in their resistance to the war," wrote Shmyhal on Thursday on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). The 50 billion euros until the end of 2027 are a "significant contribution to our joint victory".
Ukraine has been fending off a large-scale Russian invasion with Western support for almost two years. Kiev has stated that it will need the equivalent of more than 34 billion euros (around 31.7 billion Swiss francs) in foreign funding in 2024.
The European aid package should actually have been decided at a regular EU summit last December. At that time, however, the Hungarian head of government Viktor Orban vetoed the deal, preventing an agreement from being reached. Orban has now relented - whether he was made any concessions in return remained unclear at first.
