Suspect arrested after homicides in Zurich and Laupen BE

The police arrested a 45-year-old Spaniard in Geneva on Monday. Traces of the man's DNA were matched to the scenes of two homicides in Zurich-Seefeld in 2010 and Laupen BE in 2015.
The 45-year-old Spaniard was stopped on arrival in Geneva. The accused is currently in custody. He has not confessed, as the cantonal police forces of Bern and Zurich announced on Friday. Further investigations are underway.
On December 15, 2010, a 56-year-old psychoanalyst was stabbed to death in her practice in the Seefeld district of Zurich. In Laupen, a married couple was found lifeless in their apartment on December 18, 2015. The 74-year-old man and his 64-year-old wife had already been dead for several days. The couple died from sharp as well as massive blunt force trauma.
The police found the same DNA at both crime scenes, but it could not initially be matched to anyone. It was only clear that it came from a male person. As a result, DNA was taken from well over 100 people. According to the police, the people were selected "on the basis of investigative findings". But even this targeted mass test did not help the police at the time.
The responsible public prosecutor's offices and the two cantonal police forces worked closely together on the two cases, according to the press release. The investigations led to a suspect living in Spain and further investigations confirmed the suspicion.
DNA was taken from the accused on Monday. This could be matched to the DNA traces recovered from the two crime scenes in Zurich and Laupen.
Because the first offense was committed in Zurich, the Public Prosecutor's Office I of the Canton of Zurich has also taken over the proceedings regarding the homicide in Laupen. Due to the ongoing investigation, the prosecution authorities are not providing any further information at present.
