The United Nations needs significantly more money to combat the suffering in Sudan. On Wednesday in Geneva, they asked donor countries for a total of 4.1 billion dollars to help millions of people in the country itself as well as more than 1.5 million refugees and host countries in the region.

The aid is coordinated by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Last year, the sum amounted to 2.6 billion dollars (2.4 billion euros). However, only around 43 percent of this was collected.

In the North African country, at least eight million people are internally displaced following the outbreak of fighting between government troops and militias in April 2023. Chaos and destruction mean that almost 18 million people no longer have enough to eat, either now or in the near future. Healthcare has collapsed and millions of children can no longer go to school, as the organizations reported.
