The Swiss Film Weekly, which ran from 1940 to 1975, can now be searched for visual content. This is thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI), as announced by the Swiss Federal Archives on Thursday.

The Archipanion platform can be used to search the 1651 German editions of the Schweizer Filmwochenschau for images. Search terms such as "military" or "color film of a classroom" are conceivable. The amounts with the respective images are then identified and displayed by AI.

In addition, text content in the articles is also displayed thanks to text recognition. This additional search function makes it possible to explore previously undiscovered content, the Federal Archives wrote in the press release.

There are no plans to extend Archipanion to other fonds, the Federal Archives wrote in response to an inquiry. The platform is based on vitrivr, an open source multimedia search engine developed by a research group at the University of Basel. AI is already frequently used in the Federal Archives, for example to recognize handwriting in Federal Council minutes.

The German-language Schweizer Filmwochenschau (Swiss Film Weekly) comprises over 200 hours of programming. The program ran for 35 years in the supporting program of Swiss cinemas and provided information on current affairs.
