The energy group Axpo is developing a hydrogen plant in Italy together with the Australian company Infinite Green Energy (IGE). The two companies have signed a binding joint development agreement, as they announced on Tuesday.

The plant is expected to produce up to twelve tons of hydrogen per day. According to the press release, the heart of the "Valle Peligna" project in Abruzzo is an electrolyzer that is powered by solar energy. The plant is set to go online in the second half of 2025.

IGE launched the project 18 months ago. According to a company spokesperson, Axpo now has a 30 percent stake in the project. The Australian company hopes that the partnership with the Swiss energy company will strengthen trust among stakeholders and partners.

According to the information provided, the initial customer for the so-called green hydrogen is the gypsum manufacturer Etex, which intends to use it to replace natural gas. The company expects to save 67,000 tons of CO2 per year.
