The National Council wants to make it easier to convert disused farms into residential buildings. On Monday, the National Council adopted a corresponding motion by Thomas Burgherr (SVP/AG).
The Grand Chamber reached its decision by 95 votes to 93 with four abstentions. The proposal goes to the Council of States.
Burgherr is calling on the Federal Council to take measures and amend the law. This should involve disused farms that are already fully developed and connected to electricity and water.
The state government agreed with the order. It makes sense to make better use of the existing building potential, said Environment Minister Albert Rösti.
Beat Fach (GLP/AG) argued unsuccessfully that there was a risk of the separation between building and agricultural zones becoming blurred. This would drive urban sprawl.
