Mountain railroads suffer from warm February

Swiss mountain railroads suffered from the warm weather in February. Compared to February 2023, first-time admissions fell by 9 percent. Overall, however, they are still reporting a positive result for the current winter season with an increase of 7%.
Despite periods of heavy snowfall, particularly in the south of Switzerland, the weather conditions were not very favorable for the industry and snow sports in particular in February, the Swiss Cableways Association announced on Wednesday. The situation was particularly good in Ticino, however, where there was an abundance of snow in places.
The unusually warm temperatures meant that many lifts, particularly at lower altitudes, could no longer be used fully or at all. However, ski resorts at higher altitudes recorded a stable February, the association added.
With the exception of Ticino, all Swiss ski regions recorded a negative balance in February. However, the cumulative figures since the start of the season show that, in addition to Ticino (+68%), the Vaud Alps and Eastern Switzerland in particular are in a strong position in the 2023/24 winter season to date, with around 15% more new arrivals than last winter.
Meanwhile, Valais (+4%) and the Bernese Oberland (+3%) are only slightly ahead of last winter. In Graubünden, the lead is still 10%. So far this winter, only the Fribourg Alps (-36%) and the Arc Jurassien (-78%) have recorded a negative balance.
