More than 30 Swiss Army recruits have fallen ill with gastroenteritis at the Thun BE and Jassbach BE military bases. Those affected have been isolated and are being cared for by specialist staff.

Those affected are trainees at Armour School 21, Armour/Artillery Officer School 22 and Maintenance School 43 in Thun as well as Electronic Operations School 64 in Jassbach, as the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) announced on Thursday.

The visiting days planned for next Saturday at several companies of the affected army schools have been canceled. The army medical services are monitoring developments on the ground and will take further measures in consultation with the responsible commanders if necessary, the statement continued.

Gastroenteritis usually develops within 48 hours with nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Bacteria or viruses are usually responsible for gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis often heals on its own within a few days with an easily digestible diet.
