The Basel-Landschaft cantonal parliament wants the two former half-cantons of Basel-Stadt and Baselland to have full rights as cantons. On Thursday, it referred a motion by Manuel Ballmer (GLP) to the government. It has been instructed to submit a corresponding state initiative.

The Federal Parliament and the Federal Council should be asked to take the necessary steps to ensure that the two cantons of Basel and the other former half-cantons are placed on an equal footing with all other cantons in the Council of States and in terms of votes.

Back in February, the Basel-Stadt Grand Council referred the same GLP proposal to the government by 53 votes to 32 with 10 abstentions. There, however, the issue caused controversy, while the cantonal parliament passed the proposal silently and without opposition.

Over the last few decades, there have been several initiatives with the aim of giving both Basel areas two seats in the Council of States. Most recently, Basel GLP National Councillor Katja Christ submitted the postulate "Full right to the Council of States for both Basel cantons" in December 2022. However, the Federal Council requested its rejection in February 2023. It has not yet been discussed in the National Council and Council of States.
